Fad Diets

The biggest problem I have with fad diets is that it’s perceived you must choose one or the other.  That you either eat a South Beach Diet, or a Blood Type Diet, or a Paleo Diet, etc.  The other problem I have is people think the only diet is a weight loss diet.  This is influenced by the high percentage of people that are overweight and that society is grossly undereducated about nutrition.

There is no shortage of diets written for muscle building, fat loss, muscle building and fat loss, etc. Furthermore many diets can be combined. The Zone Diet is about the ratio of Protein:Fat:Carbs. Carb Backloading is about when you have your carbs.  Where a Blood Type diet is about what foods you eat. They are legs of a table and if you only do one leg; macros, timing, food choices, the table will suck. You need to master all 3 major factors to have a good diet to force the body to obey your will. Only one fad diet will fail, you need to use at least 2 or 3 at the same time.

Just think of it this way:

What food do I eat? - Food choice or Menu diet

examples: Paleo, Vegetarian, Balanced diets, Alkaline Diet

When do I eat it? Timing diet

Example: Carb Backloading Diet, intermittent fasting,

How Much do I eat? Macros diet

Examples: Ketogenic diet, Zone Diet

Please keep in mind Arnold Schwarzenegger had figured all this stuff out in the late ‘60s and almost all Fad diets are slivers of his methodology as if his diet was torn apart and pieces were sold as original ideas (Carb back loading is actually an original idea).  Once again all 3 factors have to be correct to change the body, so a Paleo, Carb Back Loaded, Zone diet is a great approach for a man who wants to build muscle but not acquire additional body fat or even lose some fat. A vegetarian, intermittent fasting, Ketogenic diet is great for an obese woman with cardiovascular comorbidities who needs to lose fat for health reasons.

Are you a morbidly Obese woman? No? Then don't eat an intermittent diet.

Do you want to live a really long time but don't really care what you look like? Then eat vegan.

You want tasty healthy food that will work for any diet? Eat Paleo.

After 24 years of counting grams and reading new fads and the theories behind them I can't grasp how this basic concept has not been considered by the mainstream media and medical community.

Why Is This Not Common Knowledge?

Most people know more about how their cars and computers work than their bodies, and what's worse, they take better care of their cars and computers than their bodies.  They know what oil and gasoline to put in their car but not what food to put in their body.  Eating the way your parents taught you your whole life then going to a pill pusher and surgeon to “fix you” is like driving your car into a brick wall every week and putting coca-cola in the gas tank for 20 years, then taking it to a mechanic to “fix it”.  Only unlike a car, you can't just get a new body.  You’re stuck with the consequences of your actions, stretch marks and all.

The Blood Type Diet

The Blood type Diet is a Food choice category fad diet. but it is clever, it doesn't actually work like a normal food choice fad diet, it is only a new first step in CHOOSING the appropriate fad diet for you!  Your Blood Type determines WHICH fad diet you use:

Type O = You eat a paleo style diet

Type A = You eat a vegetarian diet

Type B = You eat a balanced diet

Type AB = a bit of both A and B.

For someone who knows nothing about diets, when they read the diet it seems like an original idea.  They think they are in on a “secret” Like finding out their dad is the person in the santa clause costume, and then incorrectly assuming their dad IS Santa Claus not that of course, (spoiler alert!) Santa Claus isn't real.

In less Cynical words, this Naturopath, D’Adamo came up with an idea and utilizes other diets, then adds his own twists.

Here is a more detailed description, Think of Blood Type as a geographic ancestry.  Since reading about this diet I felt it was a gimmick and I did see credibility in the ancestral coorelation to blood type and diet, but not a correlation between the blood type and diet.

Blood Type O

Described by D'Adamo as the hunter. He recommends that those of this blood group eat a higher protein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables, and light on grains, beans, and dairy. D'Adamo also recommends various supplements to help with gastrointestinal problems and other issues he says people with type O tend to have. In fact, his website is little more than a store for his eccentric supplements and offers absolutely no information on the diet, just links to buy his books. The simple fact that a “doctor” (german word for teacher), Is more interested in taking your money than educating you proves to me that his motives are not the education and health of the earthlings. Only profit driven.  Yes, I am a Doctor, and yes my website has a store, but the store pays for the website so I can share with you cutting edge and basic Bodybuilding knowledge. That’s why the home page is full of articles not a “buy my shit” page.

The group is alleged by D'Adamo to be the first blood type and to have originated 30,000 years ago, although research indicates that blood type A is actually the oldest.

Blood Type A

Called the agrarian or cultivator by D'Adamo, who believes this type dates from the dawn of agriculture, 20,000 years ago. He recommends that individuals of blood group ‘A’ eat a diet that emphasizes vegetables and is free of red meat, a diet more closely vegetarian. Examples include but not limited to beans and legumes, and whole grains -- ideally, organic and fresh, because D'Adamo says people with type A blood have a sensitive immune system.

Blood Type B

Called the nomad by D'Adamo, who estimates this group to have arrived 10,000 years ago. He states that this type is associated with a strong immune system and a flexible digestive system. He also asserts that people of blood type B are the only people able to thrive on dairy.  This is contradicted by the fact that while people with blood type B tend to be from Asia (specifically, China or India), Lactose Intolerance is most common among people of Asian, South American, and African descent and least common among those descended from northern Europe or northwestern India. These are the only ancient cultures to use dairy with the exception of one tribe in Africa. Other details are avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds.  Chicken is also problematic according to  D'Adamo. He encourages eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and of course Dairy.

Blood group AB is described by D'Adamo as the enigma. In terms of dietary needs, he treats this group as an intermediate between blood types A and B.  Foods to focus on include tofu, seafood, dairy, and green vegetables. He says people with type AB blood tend to have low stomach acid. That they should avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoked or cured meats. He believes it to be the most recently evolved type and to have arrived less than 1,000 years ago. This makes almost no sense since most A and B blood types are from the same geographic region and they would have interbred.

Scientific Reasoning and it's Flaws

The big concept in why the blood type is supposed to correlate to certain foods and disease:  D’Adamo asserts that each food has lectins and they bind to the cells in people with the wrong  blood type and cause problems.  There have been numerous studies to prove this isn't true, of the few foods with harmfully binding lectins, they bind to all blood types equally.  Most of the parts of the animals and plants that have blood type specific lectins are not edible.

For instance he can claim chicken is problematic for Type B individuals because there is a lectin in chicken which binds to the Type B antigen on cells but that lectin is not in chicken meat, it is non edible parts of the chicken.

Of 88 tested Lectins from food, 29 did agglutinate with blood type antigens, but they bound equally to all 4 variations.  Why the hyperlink? Because this is brutally clear when you see this document, it is so clear there are no words. Just a huge table of endless redundant proof this guy is wrong.

Evolution of Blood Types

D’Adamo Claims that O is 30,000 years old, A 20,000, B 10,000 and AB 1,000.   There are 3 different ways I can call bullshit.

1) What happens when an AA breeds with a BB? A AB is generated 100% of the time. Since these two blood types, A and B are from the same region, then it wouldn't take 19,000 years for a tribe of A to interbreed with a tribe of B.

2) As stated above studies were conducted and it is determined that Type A is the oldest, despite the Paleo diet being FAR older than agriculture.  There is no way a human can survive on a vegetarian diet without agriculture, there just isn't enough time in the day to forage for enough calories, and defend your tribe from invading forces.

3) Type O is a recessive mutation of types A and B. It’s the absence of either. Thats why its type O not type C. It’s the lack of an antigen, the O should be a zero.

Matter can neither be created or destroyed, and for a deficient gene to spontaneously mutate to a functional gene is equally unlikely

My Conclusion

Paleo diets and vegetarian diets have their place, Paleo has my favorite menu for many scientific and common sense reasons.  It also makes sense that Scandinavians would eat paleo because that’s what they evolved eating, and Asians eat vegetarian since that’s what they evolved eating.  But the fact that type O blood is from scandinavia and Type A is from Asia is an unrelated coincidence.  There is no direct correlation between blood types and diets, the correlation is indirect, the blood type is correlated with ancestral geographic origin and diets people evolved on are correlated to ancestral geographic origin.
